Henri Cartier-Bresson was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1940. After two unsuccessful attempts, he managed to escape in 1943. During this time, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, assuming that the photographer had died in the war, started preparing what they thought was a posthumous exhibition of his work.

When he reappeared, Cartier-Bresson was delighted to learn of the exhibition, and decided to review his entire work and curate it himself. In 1946 he travelled to New York with about 300 prints in his suitcase, bought a scrapbook, glued each one in, and brought that album to MoMA’s curators. His first exhibition, a celebration of his survival, opened on 4 February 1947.

In the 1990s, Cartier-Bresson once again returned to this scrapbook. Following his death in 2004, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, the present owner of the prints, finished restoring them, making it possible to bring a large body of extraordinary, hitherto unpublished work to the public, images that have finally become a memorial collection after all.

Oompa-Loompa Politics

While reading about the French election results in the three main Spanish newspapers, I observed a tendency to add an orange cast on the face of the politicians whose politics are not shared by the paper’s ideology. And so in ‘El Pais‘ Sarkozy is shown with a weird orange cast in his face. While in ‘El Mundo’, Royal suffers the same treatment. In the ‘ABC‘ newspaper, the reference goes to God, as both personalities look up in search of divine intervention. Nothing new up to here. But I am surprised that the use of the Oompa-Loompa Photoshop filter is a usual practice, as I can not think it is a coincidence. Well, I had a look at other international news agencies and it seems to be only a Spanish thing. In ‘Le Monde‘ a cartoon is used to represent the contestants where Royal appears with a normal skin tone and Sarkozy is a square headed human. Of course, the BBC shows us how to be proper. I found a conference in Paris on the subject of “Politic Photography - Politics of Photography“, perhaps they will talk about the Oompa-Loompa Photoshop filter. Just a thought.

Sarkozy and Royal illuminated by GodSarkozy magnifique, Royal as orange as an Oompa-LoompaSarkozy as orange as an Oompa-Loompa, Royal magnifiqueIn Le Monde, Royal is human and Sarkozy square.BBC, all correct. This seems to be the correct cast. But how can we be sure?

Mark Kermode's film reviews podcast

If you haven’t done it yet, and you love cinema, subscribe to Mark Kermode’s film reviews podcast. I don’t know anybody whose ideas are more devastatingly honest about cinema. Apart from being witty, funny and entertaining, the podcast offers great advice about what NOT to watch. Saving time is a premise nowadays. Enjoy.
